About Seville

Seville sits on the Guadalquivir. The Cathedral and Real Alcázar are on one bank, and the ceramic workshops of Triana are on the other. The old centre is a walking city, but in summer the heat sets your hours.

The Cathedral, Giralda and Real Alcázar stand within a few blocks of each other at the edge of Santa Cruz. This former Jewish quarter has narrow lanes, small squares and plenty of hotels. It also gets the heaviest sightseeing crowds. Walk west to the river for the Torre del Oro, then cross the Puente de Isabel II to Triana.

Triana is the old ceramics and flamenco quarter. The Mercado de Triana and Centro Cerámica Triana sit near the bridge, and Calle Betis faces the river. North of the Cathedral, the shopping streets around Sierpes lead to Las Setas and the bars of Alameda de Hércules. Stay up here for evenings out, not for an early start at the monuments.

South of the centre, Plaza de España and Parque de María Luisa are wide and open after the old lanes. Santa Justa station is east of the historic core. Book in Nervión for a rail arrival or a match at Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. The EA airport bus stops at Santa Justa and continues past the southern edge of the centre to Plaza de Armas.

Spring and autumn are the easy months for walking. July and August average highs around 97 °F, so see the outdoor sights in the morning or evening and check that the room has good air conditioning. Semana Santa and the Feria de Abril bring big crowds. If either festival is the reason for your trip, book early.

Where to stay in Seville

  • Santa Cruz and the Cathedral

    • First visits
    • Major monuments
    • Walking

The Cathedral, Giralda and Real Alcázar are close together here. From a Santa Cruz hotel, their entrances and the gardens of Murillo are minutes away on foot. The narrow lanes are busy with visitors, and a taxi may not reach your door. Check the exact address if you have heavy luggage.

Around here: Seville Cathedral, Giralda, Real Alcázar, Jardines de Murillo

  • Centro and Las Setas

    • Restaurants
    • Shopping streets
    • Central walking

The streets between Plaza Nueva, Sierpes and Las Setas are full of shops and tapas bars, and most of the old centre is walkable from here. Alameda de Hércules, farther north, stays busy later into the night. Expect street noise near the busiest squares. A room on an interior courtyard is quieter.

Around here: Las Setas, Calle Sierpes, Plaza Nueva, Alameda de Hércules

  • Triana

    • Ceramics
    • Riverside evenings
    • Local food

Triana is across the Puente de Isabel II, by the Mercado de Triana, the ceramics centre and Calle Betis on the river. It feels like a neighborhood, with bars that fill up in the evening. The Cathedral is on the other bank, not outside your door. Check the walk back across the bridge after a late night.

Around here: Puente de Isabel II, Mercado de Triana, Centro Cerámica Triana, Calle Betis

  • El Arenal

    • River walks
    • Bus arrivals
    • Short stays

Between the Cathedral and the Guadalquivir, El Arenal is close to the Torre del Oro, the Maestranza bullring and the river walks. Plaza de Armas bus station is toward its northern edge. The streets by the river are busier at night, and the Cathedral side is crowded by day.

Around here: Torre del Oro, Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, Plaza de Armas, Guadalquivir

  • Nervión and Santa Justa

    • Rail arrivals
    • Football
    • Airport bus

Nervión lies east of the historic centre, around Santa Justa station and Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. It has less character than Santa Cruz. It is the easy choice for trains, the EA airport bus and match days. To reach the Cathedral, take a bus or tram, or allow for a longer walk.

Around here: Sevilla-Santa Justa, Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, Nervión Plaza
